why i compose...
"Your Music Helped Me to Pray"
When a humble Polish priest said this to me after hearing my Missa Musica Sacra, composed for the cathedral in Warsaw, Poland, everything changed for me.
Until this time, I composed to get accolades and acclaim. I even wrote this piece, the Missa Musica Sacra as the dissertation for the Chopin University of Music in Poland as a Fulbright Scholar. It was premiered on National TV and Radio. Yet, suddenly, with just these 6 words, my reason for composing went from being about me, to helping others come close to God.
Now, I compose to be useful. I compose with the sole intent to help bring the Holy Spirit in greater abundance for churches, congregations, and families. Every note has to earn its place in this mission. And even when I'm writing operas, I work hard to create an experience so special that, even a non-religious person might call it "sacred."
